Influence

The Vikings influenced to the development of the England crieply. They built new towns, ending in "by", "toft", "throb" (Derby, Grinsby). They tought the Anglo-Saxons navigation and shipbuilding. Trade developed, the coinage was improved, new tools and weapons came into use

The language of Anglo-Saxons was effected too. Many surnames endin by "son" appeared. Everyday words were borrowed (happy, ugly, weak, to take)

Invasion

Between the 8th and 11th centuries vikings terrorised the inhabitants of coast in towns and villages throughout Europe. But what dropped them to make war? One of the main reasons was the shortage of farmland in Scandinavia which often led to food crisis.In search of a better life young vikings crossed the sea and plundered the nearby crospirons and lands

In 793 Vikings carried out their first rates on Britain. The earliest rates were for plunder only. In 835 they came not to plunder but to conquer and settle. The vikings' raids were succesful because England didn't have regular army or fleet to meet them

Culture

Vikings were pagans -- they worshipped lots of gods and nature. Viking culture was rich in art and forms of entertainment. Not surprisingly for a people whose homelands featured a cold climate and long winter nights, their entertainment relied heavily on indoor activities. Their literature, rooted in oral tradition, included a wealth of poetry and tales such as the Heimskringla, or sagas of the Norse kings. Vikings enjoyed strategic board games, some of which they adopted from other societies such as backgammon and chess

Appearance

If you ask somebody today to describe the appearance of Vikings, you will often hear the same description: a large strong man with long brown hair and beard. He protects himself with a sword, an axe and shield and wears a helmet with horns.http://www.apriorico.com/scen/vikingi.htm

But there is no archeological evidence that viking warriors wore any type of horns helmets. It was the invention of Greek and Roman Writers. Helmets with horns were worn sometimes but only for very important religious ceremonies.

Who were they?

The Vikings were the same Germanic origin as the Anglo-Saxons themselves. They arrived from the Scandinavia, Norway, Sweden and Denmark

They were skillful sailors navigating the stormy north Atlantic with only the stars and seabirds to guide them.
They descovered America 5 000 years before Christopher Columbus.
